Here is how I know I am an herbalist. I just opened up a bag of dried comfrey and burdock root and it was like I got a "hit", my body just swooned. I LOVE herbs. They are so comforting to me. When I go to a store where they are just sitting in canisters I get so happy, I buzz on the inside. If this happens to you you are probably an herbalist or one in the making.
When I think back - I was like this even when I was a kid. There was a health food store near my high school (Stuyvesant H.S.) that had almost nothing but dried herbs. I would just float around from container to container and I felt so at home so at peace. I am Native American on my both sides of my family (Mom = Cree; Dad = Black Creek) and love/use of herbs for healing is the only real legacy that filtered down in my family. My mother, grandmother and great-great grandmother Jemima all have had a knowledge of herbal uses as medicinal remedies.
I think well cultivated herbs are alive with a kind of energy that says "We are safe and a friend to your body and it's vibrant wellbeing". That's not to say that some herbs are not harmful (think nightshade in "Practical Magic" with Sandra Bullock). But the ones you will find at your local health store radiate that friendly, good feeling vibe, generally speaking.
